The West Coast Fossil Park

Cycle in one of the richest fossil sites in the world!

Visit the West Coast Fossil Park close to Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa. See the fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and the many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago. This national museum site has a rich heritage of geophysical forces, prehistoric animals, mining exploitation, fossil discovery and natural regeneration.

Informative guided walking tours to the dig site are the main attraction. The Fossil Park is well worth visiting as it is one of the few places where you can see fossils in the ground exactly as they were buried some 5 million years ago and exactly as they have been carefully uncovered by the research teams.

The park offers a variety of intellectual, physical and gastronomic activities! You can take a fossil tour and enjoy a fascinating journey back into the past to some 5 million years ago, enjoy a tasty meal/tea at the restaurant, browse our small gift shop or book an activity for your children e.g. mock digs, make your own fossil, owl pellet dissections and more.
