Tokai MTB
Located in the Table Mountain National Park, the Tokai mountain bike trails are truly unique catering for riders of all ages, from novice to seasoned professional athletes. The trails have recently been rebuilt (following a devastating fire in 2015 which destroyed much of the original network and plantation forests in Silvermine and Tokai area). The trails are open to the public only over weekends as contractors are still working onsite to remove the remaining areas of burnt pine and gum trees and support the restoration of the naturally occurring fynbos.
Once fully rehabilitated this prime conservation area will eventually accommodate pockets of Afro-montain forests to usher in new life and shade for a range of new experiences in Tokai overlooking its newly restored spectacular views!
The Trails are constructed, managed and maintained by non-profit organization TokaiMTB who follow the best practices of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) through the African IMBA representative body and non-profit company, Amarider.
To use these trails an annual My Activity Permit Level 3 for mountain biking is required. Alternatively, day passes are available for Tokai at the Braai Site Kiosk (Tokai Forest Braai & Picnic Area)
Important info:
Information signage (maps, indemnity and conditions of entry) have been installed at the pay point and trail heads.
Access for mountain bikers will be from the Tokai Picnic site while access for hikers, joggers and walkers will be from the Silvermine entrances only (e.g. Ou Kaapse Weg, Constantia Nek and Blackburn Ravine).
Cyclists be aware that there are a limited number of parking bays available in both the Tokai and Silvermine car parks. For ease of access we recommend you arrive on your bike as the Greenbelt offers direct access to the area.
Cyclists to please also note that many of the jeep tracks are shared with horse riders, hikers and trail runners, please respect that they have right of way. This does of course not apply to the MTB only designated singletrack which have undergone some recent changes in direction. We urge you to get accustomed to the revisions before heading out and to take note of changes as indicated in the signage on the trail.
- Remain on designated trails only, remember access is going to be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
- The Arboretum is still closed to all public access.
- Ride in groups of four or more and don’t carry valuables while in the Park. Please also ensure that you notify someone of your intended route and expected return time and save the following SANParks emergency number on your phone: 0861 110 6417.
