Mountain Mist
Come and experience the peace, tranquility and magnificent views of our Mountain-Top Private Nature Reserve. Only 180 km from Cape Town, above the village of Aurora, we are the same height as Table Mountain, which can be seen on a clear day. From the cottages there are views of St Helena bay to the West and the Piketberg and Cederberg to the North and East.
The essence of Mountain Mist is the peace, tranquility and a relaxed atmosphere we offer our guests. It’s a place to enjoy nature at its best, in a clean space and to reconnect to what is important in life.
Activities
Our land has a rich variety of Mountain Fynbos, Birds and awesome rock formations. Leopards, Klipspringer, Duiker, Vaal Rhebok, Dassies, Lynx, Tortoises, Porcupines and Baboons share the mountain with us. Also to be found are lizards, skinks and other smaller mammals.
Birding, hiking, mountain biking, star gazing. There are hikes and strolls. Unspoilt bushman paintings are easily accessible. For the more active there is a hike down to a Wild Olive grove where some of the trees are estimated to be hundreds of years old.
For the Mountain Biker the road to Mountain Mist is 15 kms long and rises over 650 metres.
Our guests can enjoy the exclusive use of the “bush pool” fed by the pure water of a mountain stream. Our drinking water has been tested as being some of the purest in the country.
With the lack of rains the Western Cape has experienced this winter, the West Coast Wild Flowers are flowering early. Visitors to the Sandveld need only take a drive on any of the gravel roads around the farms to experience the carpeted display of Spring Flowers. Mountain Mist is situated above the heart of the Sandveld, overlooking the West Coast. Vistas extend from Langebaan lagoon, across to Paternoster, Britannia Bay and the whole of St Helena Bay, the biggest bay in Africa. Flowers can be viewed on most of the sand roads in and around Aurora.
AURORA MTB TRAIL
Aurora MTB Trail is an easy to moderate trail of 20-40km and runs from the little town Aurora at the west of the Piketberg Mountain range, all the way up to Kapteinskop. It has a long and steady climb to more than 1000 meters with spectacular views of the whole West Coast region from the Atlantic ocean to the mountains of the Cederberg and Winterberg. The route follows a mix of jeep tracks and gravel/sand roads with sections where the surface is loose and rocky.
Start the route in Aurora town centre and head out of town towards Redelinghuis in a northerly direction. After about 2.5km turn off right to Mountain Mist and start to climb (this is the steepest section of the route). Midway it levels out and the second half of the climb is more gradual as the narrow gravel road winds along the western edge of the mountain. Mountain Mist is located at the top of the climb. For those heading back down to town, expect a long, winding descent with some fast and loose sections.
