Stellenbosch University & Matie Bikes
Trying to make it to class on time? Or want to save on petrol? Hire a Matie bike to reach your destination on or around campus.
Stellenbosch is the first South African university to set the bicycle wheels rolling for sustainability. Since 15 March 2012 staff and students can rent Matie Bikes. Safe bicycle sheds are also being erected while the establishment of cycling lanes is being undertaken together with the Municipality.
The first Matie Bikes were imported from the Netherlands by BEN (Bike Empowerment Network). These bicycles were blue and identified by a special sticker as a Matie Bike.
New maroon Matie Bikes were purchased at the end 2016. Like the old blue bicycles, these bicycles do not have gears, and have hand brakes instead of back-pedal brakes.
Visit the website for further information on rental procedure and costs or contact Wendy at (021) 808-9071 or fiets_bike@sun.ac.za
Bicycle stands and sheds
While bicycle stands will still be available on campus, it is envisaged to erect various safe bicycle sheds at central points on campus. There are currently bicycle sheds available at:
- the Arts Building
- the Polymer Building
- the Seminary and
- at the Engineering Building (south side).
In order to gain access to the bicycle shed(s), bicycles may be registered for free at Vehicle Services in Banghoekweg. Your staff card or student card will then be activated to give you access to the bicycle sheds. Matie Bikes are automatically activated, but you have to apply to have your private bicycle registered.
