Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

With luxurious state of the art facilities, Golden Gate Hotel has a classy and modern decorating theme, ‘African seasons’, visible throughout the hotel and compliments the natural surroundings of the Park.

Rejuvenation is on offer at Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Spend time in the majestic Maluti Mountains, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, exploring caves and much more in their indescribable golden glow. The vulture’s restaurant (bird hide) welcomes birders to a proper vulture feast. Basotho Cultural Village will transport you back in time and take you on an incredible journey where a chief offers you mqombothi (sorghum beer), his wives offer you the fruits of their labour and a traditional healer offers you insight into African spirituality.

Cycling Golden Gate

Golden Gate offers a range of  cycling options, the roads are tarred for most of the way with some good hill climbs. You can cycle the park rather than driving it in a vehicle. Take the Oribi Loop– (4.2 km) for magnificent views of the Drakensberg and stop off at the Vulture Feeding Project. The Blesbok Loop – (6.7 km) has breathtaking scenery. Expect steep climbs but the panoramic views from the Generaal’s Kop viewing point are worth it! Look out for zebra, wildebeest, mountain reedbuck and chacma baboon. If you cycle from Clarens then take the Blesbok and Oribi Loops makes for a total riding distance just shy of 50km.
