Canola Gravel Cycle Routes

Mapped by www.visitswellendam.co.za these scenic cycle routes transverse the farming area between Buffeljags, Suurbraak, Swellendam and Malgas in the South.

The routes are all on jeep tracks and are not technical. There are currently 5 routes- 32km, 51km, 74km, 85km & 93km. Click on the route below to view route details and download a pdf or GPS map to navigate. In Suurbraak and Malgas there are cafes where you can buy water and snacks etc. At the Breede River Trading Post in Malgas there is a toilet as well.

A good place to start most of these routes are in Swellendam or at Oude Post Bistro & BP Fill Station in Buffeljags. Oude Post Bistro has great coffee, parking and playing area for children.

Crossing the Breede River on the Malgas Pont (the last hand-pulled one in South Africa) is free of charge for bicycles, but give the “puller” something for his trouble – so remember this when packing your Camelback. If the Pont is on the other side of the river, waving a R10 is good incentive to get him on your side.
