Escape the hustle & bustle of city life with this fun overnight route to Magaliesberg Mountains, near Johannesburg.

OVERNIGHT | ⇔ 70 or 94 km (loop) | + 920m | ≡ Tar/ Gravel

Escape the hustle & bustle of city life with this fun overnight route to the beautiful, Magaliesberg Mountains, in Gauteng. It’s short enough to be prefect for newbies or those wanting to test out their bikepacking setup before a big trip.

The starting point for the route is Oaktree Engen One Stop, located in Muldersdrift, about a 50 minute drive by car from Johannesburg. From here the route follows a mix of gravel and tar to Lovers Rock campsite located 5km from the small town of Magaliesburg. There are a few different camp sites and B&Bs options in the area that you can stay at.

You can pack light and get all your necessary supplies at Magaliesburg Super Spar, and there are also pubs and restaurants in the area (including a Wimpy and Steers) if you don’t feel like cooking. For the return trip you have the option of going back the same way you came or taking the longer loop round which is shown here.

At the time of cycling this route, was the entrance to Malmani Road restricted to residents? Attempted to cycle this route today and was met by this restriction. If so, how did you get a permit to continue on the route?
