Sani Lodge provides a wide range of accommodation deep in the majestic Southern Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, bordering directly onto the World Heritage listed uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.

Pioneered by Simone and Russell (author of A Backpacker’s Guide to Lesotho) in 1992, Sani Lodge is one of the oldest owner run backpackers in KZN and a leader in Responsible Tourism and dedicated to social investment and environmental conservation.

As a 4 star graded Backpackers, our accommodation is simple, affordable, cosy, clean and comfortable with the personal touch of Simone’s creative flair for African Ethnic Décor and art paintings evident in all the rooms and art gallery at the Lodge restaurant.

Sani Lodge is home to the Giant’s Cup Café started in 1997 by Simone and is well known for wholesome home-made goodness and cosy atmosphere. Our policy of local procurement of South African foods, supporting local producers in our district, buying organic / free range, growing as much fruit and vegetables as we can in summer, and having our own source of organic milk means that what you eat / drink in our restaurant directly supports all these producers and healthy motives.

Revel in the stunning views from our poolside, or hike from our doorstep to idyllic mountain pools and waterfalls and hidden caves. We run guided hiking and cultural tours as well as organising volunteering opportunities at a nearby primary school.

Mountain Biking

The mountain terrain is ideal for keen bikers to explore, offering gentle gradients with spectacular scenery, to the challenge of the famous Sani Pass into Lesotho, an ascent of 900 metres between the South African and Lesotho border posts. So, if it’s the rush of adrenaline you’re after or just a relaxing ride, bring your own bikes and set off from Sani Lodge for an unforgettable experience.

We have a lockable shed close to the rooms where bikes can be stored, both on arrival and overnight/s. We are totally flexible for camping – never full, no bookings required, just arrive whenever!
