SUMMARY:City Centre Cycle
DESCRIPTION:** Join us for Friday lunchtime cycles around the city centre ** \nThe City Centre Cycle is a 45-minute lunchtime group ride around the CBD which aims to promote cleaner\, safer\, more accessible\, low-carbon transport; raise awareness about bicycle safety among cars and develop a cycling culture in the city centre. These weekly rides attract between 10-25 riders ranging from absolute beginners to experienced commuters. \nPlease join us this Friday to #takebackthestreets and cycle the city with Community Chest Unogwaja\, and support from Open Streets Cape Town \nCycling has the potential to improve our streets and our quality of life. While government has an important role to play\, it is equally up to us as everyday citizens to create the kinds of streets we would like to live and play in. \nWhat to bring:\n– Bicycle\n– Helmet\n– Friends and colleagues\n– Enthusiasm \nNo bike? There are 15 bikes and helmets available for booking\, please contact sivuyile.jokazi@capetown.gov.za by Thursday afternoon. \nTo share with friends on social media\, see the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/574073333348093/ \nWhere to meet:\nArch for Arch\, corner of Wale Street and Adderley Street\, outside the Slave Lodge and Entrance to the Company’s Gardens. See: https://goo.gl/maps/Q7b6Zg1jN8y \nPlease get in touch if you have any questions\, we look forward to seeing you there! \n \n“Although the city centre has developed a number of cycle lanes\, these are under-utilised and often disregarded. Vehicles are parked across the lanes or informal gatherings and pedestrians further impede bicycle passage. Cycling provides a more efficient way for people to commute\, especially within the CBD. We need to support actions which can activate the streets and get more people onto bikes and into the cycle lanes.” Stephen Granger\, Manager of Environmental Planning and Sustainability\, City of Cape Town. \nBIKE 2 WORK\nFor more cycling activations\, join Open Streets’ weekly cycle to work with the #Bike2Work Campaign\, alongside Bicycle South\, Pedal Power Association and the Bicycling Empowerment Network. Every Friday leave your car at home and join a bike bus (groups ride) from Claremont\, Table View\, Gugulethu and Athlone.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate #WomenOnBikes this Women’s Month\, join Open Streets and partners from Bicycling Empowerment Network\, Pedal Power Association\, Bicycle South and TSiBA Education for a day of raising awareness and dialogue about women and bicycles. Together we will: \n\nShare stories\nMeet other women who cycle\nHear from inspiring speakers\nLearn basic bicycle maintenance and road safety\nCycle together on a short ride\n\nAccording to World Bicycle Relief\, “access to bikes can allow women and girls in Africa better access to education\, healthcare\, and employment. Women can also experience an increase in safety when traveling in comparison to walking”. \nFurthermore\, ”there is a clear need for women to have access to bicycles but issues of safety\, street harassment and poor infrastructure can still limit bike transportation for women.” \nOn 18 August we aim to highlight these challenges by bringing together women cyclists\, instructors\, bike shop owners\, and activists for one day to help educate and encourage a more conducive environment for women to cycle in the city. \nPlease confirm your attendance here: https://goo.gl/forms/CE0lReD0sklwDLBM2 \nand join the event on Facebook.

The discussion will be framed by the historical context of cycling in South Africa and globally but will focus on the lived experience of individuals in Khayelitsha today. \n————————–\nWhat’s World Bicycle Day?\n————————–\nThe announcement by the United Nations designating June 3rd as the official World Bicycle Day marks an important milestone for bicycle advocacy internationally. Acknowledging the multiple societal and environmental benefits of using the bicycle for transport\, leisure\, and social development\, this UN Resolution strengthens global and country-specific cycling initiatives.

SUMMARY:Twilight Family MTB and trail run
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes one rides a mountain bike to see how fast you can go; how good you are on technical sections\, or how fit you are. Sometimes you get on your bike just to have fun. \nPPA’s Twilight Family MTB falls squarely in the latter category. It’s a social event where the emphasis is on family participation; riding with friends; getting beginners and unfit riders onto their bicycles; and simply letting your hair down. \nNEW VENUE AND ROUTES\nThis year the Twilight Family event is moving to the Anura Wine Estate in Klapmuts. There are two non-technical MTB routes to choose from: 15 km and 5 km. This year we are also adding the option of a trail run\, with a 10 km and 5 km run/walk on offer. All distances are carefully chosen to be ‘doable’\, with routes rather going around hills than over them. \nThe new 5 km route is a great route for novice riders or even complete beginners\, and offers a total elevation gain/loss of less than 100m. Participants will pedal around some of the scenic areas on Anura. Kids older than 5 are most welcome to enter this route\, provided they are accompanied by an adult at all times. FREE entry for PPA members for the 5 km route! \nThe 15 km route will again incorporate the hugely popular water point on the neighbouring Niel Joubert Estate where bubbly\, water and sweets are on offer. Kids older than 10 are welcome to ride the 15 km route\, provided they are accompanied by an adult at all times. \nBack at the venue\, Anura Estate will be launching their new “Wednesday night beer\, pizza and live music” evenings\, so do bring along some clean clothes to change into and join us for a mid-week sundowner break. Come and pedal your MTB on the scenic Anura Estate\, or run/walk one of the trail running options\, and afterwards relax under the fairy lights while enjoying something to eat and drink. \nThe 15 km MTB will start at 18h00\, with the others to follow. Cut-off for all events is at 20h00 to make sure everyone gets back to the venue before it gets too dark to see where you’re going on the trail. Either way\, we recommend that you bring bicycle lights or headlamps along\, and don’t hang around too long at the (in-)famous “bubbly” water point on the 15 km MTB and 10 km run. \nThere will be no seeding or timing – just come and enjoy yourself. \nDress up and win: Three wonderful lucky draw prizes are on offer for the most inventive fancy dress outfit on the bike (dress up your bicycle as well – and yes\, you have to ride in your outfit!)\, and three prizes for the runners with the most inventive costumes. There’s no specific theme this year – just surprise us with your creativity! \nDIRECTIONS TO VENUE\nFrom Cape Town\, take the N1 North. Take Exit 47 to Klapmuts/Wellington. Turn right under the bridge towards Klapmuts. Cross over the 4-way traffic lights intersection and the railway bridge. Turn left 200m along at the next set of traffic lights\, onto the Simondium/Franschhoek Road. After about 200m\, the Anura Estate will be on the right.
