SUMMARY:Bikamino - 72 Hour Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Date 2 – 5 May 2019 | Distance 243km | Ascent 4807m | Cut Off 72 hours | Meals 9 | Overnight Points 3\n  \nInspired by the Camino de Santiago – pilgrimage to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela – the Bikamino is a pilgrimage of a different sort. A journey by bicycle; through the ancient heartland of South Africa\, past copper mines which pre-date European colonialism\, to the wildest of coastlines – the Namaqua Coastal Route. There are easier ways to traverse a region\, but besides hiking there isn’t a way that immerses yourself in the landscape quite like cycling. Now throw everything you need on your bike and you’re bikepacking. \nThe Bikamino\, launches in May 2019 as a three-day/72 hour experience which can be raced or ridden from Okiep Country Hotel an historic mining town to the great coastal plains of the Atlantic Ocean at the small fishing village of Hondeklipbaai. \nThe lure of the event is the landscape and the people. A region like no other Namaqualand provides endless unspoilt horizons; seemingly harsh but surprisingly fertile soils\, rich in minerals and floral biodiversity; and some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet. \nIn the inaugural Bikamino riders will have 72 hours to navigate the 243 kilometre route from the Okiep Country Hotel to Hondeklipbaai. Part of the adventure of the event is choosing your bike\, your route and how you will take on the challenge. There are two route options\, a red and a green route. The red is shorter and rougher – more suited to mountain bikes. Longer and smoother the green route is – navigable by hard-men and –women on gravel bikes. Either way riders will receive the route as a GPX file along with a map to ensure they reach the designated check points where they will have to have their Bikamino passports stamped.

SUMMARY:KAROOBAIX
DESCRIPTION:KAROOBAIX is a one-day 245km race (with an individual time trial prologue) for modern gravel / cyclocross bicycles through the South African Karoo over 5 / 6 / 7 October 2018. The route is almost exclusively gravel\, and ranges from super smooth hard-packed dirt to soft sand\, sharp rocks and corrugations. The race will be semi-supported\, and there will be two rest stops with good food\, coffee and fresh water along the the 245km stage. \nThe name KAROOBAIX (pronounced ka-roo-bay) pays homage the Paris-Roubaix race\, the murderous European Classic that earned itself the nickname Hell of the North\, and our unique\, spectacular and sometimes inhospitable semi-desert region of the Karoo. \nFor roughly three days of KAROOBAIX the little town of Calvinia in the Hantam Karoo area of the Northen Cape will be our base. Racers will have the option to drive themselves\, or take a shuttle to and from Calvinia. Everyone will be expected to be checked into our accommodation by 13:00\, at which time we will be served a light traditional lunch. At 15:00 the event will officially start with the compulsory time trail prologue\, and give everyone the opportunity to meet and socialise a bit. In the evening the Hantam Huis will serve us a magnificent spit-roast dinner\, during which the race briefing will take place. The next morning is race day\, and we start with a light breakfast at 04:00\, and set off at 04:30. As riders complete the stage in the afternoon\, they can have their dinner (which will be hot and ready) when they choose and head to bed. The next morning at 09:00 we will have our celebratory breakfast\, and lift our Mimosa-filled glasses to the victor of KAROOBAIX 2018. \nRace outline… \n Friday / 5 October 2018 – 11:00 arrival in Calvinia and check-in / 13:00 Lunch / 15:00 Time trail prologue / 19:00 Dinner / 20:00 race briefing\n Saturday / 6 October 2018 – 04:00 Breakfast / 04:30 Start / 17:00 (onwards) Dinner served informally\n Sunday / 7 October 2018 – 09:00 Breakfast and prize giving / 12:00 Checkout and departure

SUMMARY:Tour of Ara
DESCRIPTION:The Tour of Ara\, named for the Southern Hemisphere constellation of Ara\, is a prestige race that is ridden mostly on South African-built steel racing bicycles in the proud tradition of the early Italian multi-day stage races. \nThe Tour follows a tough new dirt-road route over six days through the beautiful but harsh semi-desert Karoo and surrounds every year\, and is as much a race as it is an exploration and celebration of this unique landscape and the people that live there. \nFor 2018 the Tour of Ara will be open to only 40 racers. In light of the gruelling distances of the previous two years resulting in injuries and a few broken bicycles frames\, the route will include a bit easier this year\, and the total distance has been brought down to about 640km. This year will also include two neural sections on the first and fifth stages\, allowing riders to not only enjoy the landscape\, but also each other’s company from their bicycles. Because of the horrible drought much of the Karoo is facing at the moment\, the Tour will visit towns this year that can support our stay a little more comfortable\, and we will visit lovely Fraserburg\, unique Williston\, and remote Middelpos. \nThe dates for the next Tour of Ara race are 1 – 6 September 2018\, and this will be your last Tour ever. I believe 5 years is a good run to the Tour\, and I’ve decided to share this news now as the chorus of “I’m doing this next year” and “it’s on my list!” has grown louder and louder. For those of you who want a last chance to ride the Tour\, 2018 is your year… \nThere are still a few spots open for Tour of Ara 2018. If you’d like to come and race with us this year\, please send an entry request email to stan@dayone.co.za as soon as possible to secure your spot.
