DESCRIPTION:The Race to Paarl is a 610 km\, non-stop\, self-navigated mountain bike race starting in Willowmore and ending in Paarl. Riders are allowed a maximum of 6 days to complete the ride. \nRTP is a physically and mentally demanding undertaking – to complete this challenge\, riders need to be adequately trained\, equipped and prepared. Apart from the fitness\, riders also need to be proficient at navigation and bike maintenance.  \nThe route passes through the Swartberg and Winelands sections of the Freedom Trail which traverses a wide variety of off-road terrain including dirt roads\, farm roads\, old historical wagon routes and animal tracks. Apart from the riding\, there a few portage sections where riders will have to hike\, push and even carry their bikes. It includes the iconic Gamkaskloof and Die Leer hiking route out of Die Hel as well as the infamous Stettynskloof on the final day. \nSince the route is not marked\, riders need to navigate by means of maps\, compass and narrative directions – the use of GPS devices during the race is not allowed and will lead to disqualification.

Apart from the fitness\, riders also need to be proficient at navigation and bike maintenance. \nThe route follows the Freedom Trail from Pietermaritzburg to Wellington along a wide variety of off-road terrain – dirt roads\, farm roads and tracks\, footpaths and animal tracks.Many of the trails retrace old historic wagon routes which are no longer in regular use. Apart from the riding\, there are numerous portage sections where riders will have to hike\, push and even carry their bikes. \nThe route traverses six terrestrial biomes and the geography ranges from coastal to mountainous to semi-desert. Anticipated temperatures during June/July can range from 35 degrees Celcius down to minus 10 degrees Celcius. SUMMARY:The Freedom Circuit
DESCRIPTION:The Freedom Circuit is an extremely challenging self-supported bike packing race which will take place in South Africa in late April – early May annually. The route may change from year to year and will often incorporate large portions of the Freedom Trail.  \nThere is a short and a long course route offering with fairly challenging cut-offs on the long route so night riding is required. The route is not marked. Riders are required to carry their own GPS devices for navigation and must follow the designated route. Very little is offered in the way of formal support on the course but detailed route information is provided in terms of distances between resupply points\, lodging options\, safe camping areas\, water availability and technical route cautions.  \nThis is a self-supported event. Riders must carry everything they require including mandatory equipment. Riders may not receive any personal support/seconding whilst in competition. All riders will carry satellite trackers with 2-way communication for live tracking and emergencies but essentially competitors take responsibility for their own safety.  \n> Explore the Freedom Challenge event series.

SUMMARY:WRTT Campout
DESCRIPTION:Join the crew at WRTT ( We ride the Thunder ) for an overnight bike campout to Lovers Rock campsite in the Magaliesburg on the 26-8-2020.\nThis Is a tag along ride\, you will be responsible for yourself. So that will include booking your accommodation (R120 to camp there over that weekend)\, supply your own food\, snacks\, gear\, so basically everything you will need on the trip.\n\nWe will leave the Oak Tree Engen one stop at 15:00pm on Saturday the 26 September 2020 and return on Sunday the 27 September 2020. Return time still to be determined as we will probably have lunch at a local pub or brewery in the area before heading back.\n\n\nThere is a bar and restaurant at Lovers rock\, but you welcome to bring your own food etc.\nThe pace will be medium around 16-20km/h\nThe distance is roughly 35kms each way with a couple hills and mostly gravel roads. Same route there and back but might change.  But all tagging along will be notified of a changes.\nYou will need some riding experience to be able to do the ride with us. \nIf you want you can have family and friends meet you at Lovers rock with your gear if you don’t want to ride with it.\n\n\nWe at WRTT don’t take any responsibility or liability for anyone choosing to join us on a ride. DESCRIPTION:The Mother Amateur Bicycling Club has organised another great event:\nThe Great Bain’s Kloof Rush.\nAugust 9th-11th\nWoodstock to Tweede Tol campsite! \nIt’s a bike race/ride to Tweede Tol campsite in Bainskloof. We will camp for 2 nights and then ride back around 10-11am on Sunday. \nRACE: The race will be a weight handicapped race. Riders will set off in intervals\, heaviest bikes first\, lightest bikes last.\nYou can choose any route to Bainskloof. All roads should end up funnelling through Wellington and Bainskloof pass. So get your map out and start planning. First one to pitch their tent/shelter wins! \nRIDE: If you aren’t keen on racing and would rather just ride there will be a group of riders that set off before the race at 8am. SUMMARY:Bikamino - 72 Hour Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Date 2 – 5 May 2019 | Distance 243km | Ascent 4807m | Cut Off 72 hours | Meals 9 | Overnight Points 3\n  \nInspired by the Camino de Santiago – pilgrimage to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela – the Bikamino is a pilgrimage of a different sort. A journey by bicycle; through the ancient heartland of South Africa\, past copper mines which pre-date European colonialism\, to the wildest of coastlines – the Namaqua Coastal Route. There are easier ways to traverse a region\, but besides hiking there isn’t a way that immerses yourself in the landscape quite like cycling. Now throw everything you need on your bike and you’re bikepacking. \nThe Bikamino\, launches in May 2019 as a three-day/72 hour experience which can be raced or ridden from Okiep Country Hotel an historic mining town to the great coastal plains of the Atlantic Ocean at the small fishing village of Hondeklipbaai. \nThe lure of the event is the landscape and the people. A region like no other Namaqualand provides endless unspoilt horizons; seemingly harsh but surprisingly fertile soils\, rich in minerals and floral biodiversity; and some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet. \nIn the inaugural Bikamino riders will have 72 hours to navigate the 243 kilometre route from the Okiep Country Hotel to Hondeklipbaai. Part of the adventure of the event is choosing your bike\, your route and how you will take on the challenge. There are two route options\, a red and a green route. The red is shorter and rougher – more suited to mountain bikes. Longer and smoother the green route is – navigable by hard-men and –women on gravel bikes. Either way riders will receive the route as a GPX file along with a map to ensure they reach the designated check points where they will have to have their Bikamino passports stamped.
