Celebrating World Bicycle Day 2018
3rd June 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
To celebrate World Bicycle Day 2018, join Cape Town Bicycle Mayor, Lebogang Mokwena, and partners – Open Streets, Bicycling Empowerment Network, Pedal Power Association, Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy – for a day of raising awareness and learning together:
– Sharing stories
– Meeting new bicycle friends
– Hearing from speakers, including Sipho Mona (Velokhaya), Sizwe Nzima (Iyeza Express – a bicycle courier service company in Khayelitsha) and Lebogang Mokwena (Learn2Cycle)
– Learning to ride a bicycle (bicycle provided)
– Going on a group ride (bring your own bicycle and helmet!)
PLEASE CONFIRM ATTENDANCE HERE: https://goo.gl/forms/F67NgUUxU9FxWXxi1
Building on a similar discussion which took place on 21 April 2018 (https://openstreets.org.za/news/bicycle-stories-might-help-pave-cycle-way-cape-town), we’ll aim to understand some of the challenges to cycling in Khayelitsha specifically, and to explore what can be done to promote commuter cycling in townships more broadly. The discussion will be framed by the historical context of cycling in South Africa and globally but will focus on the lived experience of individuals in Khayelitsha today.

What’s World Bicycle Day?
————————–
The announcement by the United Nations designating June 3rd as the official World Bicycle Day marks an important milestone for bicycle advocacy internationally. Acknowledging the multiple societal and environmental benefits of using the bicycle for transport, leisure, and social development, this UN Resolution strengthens global and country-specific cycling initiatives.
